Effects of strength training on IGF-1 and functional autonomy in eldely women

Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of strength training on the levels of IGF-1 and functional autonomy in elderly women. The sample included 24 subjects divided into an experimental group (EG; n: 14; age: 69±5.1 years; BMI: 27.91±4.2), subjected to resistance exercise (2-3 sets of 8 to 10 repetitions for each exercise; 3x / week, 50 minutes / session) for 20 weeks and a control group (CG; n: 10; age: 69±5.9 years; BMI: 28.57±4.1). Control of strength training intensity was performed by perceived exertion. IGF-1 levels were analyzed by chemiluminescence. The GDLAM protocol of functional autonomy was applied and the overall autonomy index (AI) was calculated. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant improvement in the levels of IGF-1 and AI (p <0.05) in EG. In intergroup comparison, the EG had higher levels IGF-1 and AI (p <0.05) compared to the CG in posttest. Strength training contributed to an increase in IGF-1 hormone levels and to performance improvement in activities of daily living in the elderly women.
