Intellectual disability is a life condition that presents challenges in various areas, such as adaptive, cognitive, and social functioning. The objective of this study was to analyze mothers' perceptions of how adapted sports have influenced the psychological well-being of their children with Down Syndrome during their first basketball competitions. A qualitative interpretative phenomenological design was employed. Two mothers of basketball players who participated in their first and second national competitions, respectively, were interviewed, and the data were analyzed through collaborative analysis. The main findings revealed that adapted sports positively influenced all dimensions of psychological well-being, particularly in fostering positive relationships with others and autonomy. Finally, it was concluded that it is important to develop adapted sports programs with a focus on using competition to promote healthy social interaction.
