Abstract

Maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max) is related to heart rate (HR) in aerobic exercise. The objective was to relate the HR recovery (HRr) and VO2 max. HRr was determined by the Ebbeling walk test and VO2 max by the incremental Bruce test. Their relationship was analyzed in 21 men and 15 women studying at one private university (PU1) and 12 men at another private university (PU2); all were physical education students. Data were correlated with SPSS 19. For PU1, the HRr-VO2 max relationship was rho=-0.61 (p<0.01) in men and r=-0.22 (p>0.05) in women; for PU2 it was r=-0.5 (p>0.05) in men. We conclude that the trend is for VO2 max to increase when HRr decreases, and that for men at PU1 the HRr in the Ebbeling test is an indicator of VO2 max in the Bruce test.
